Garde Arts Center
The Garde Arts Center is an arts block of historic buildings in downtown New London, with the crown jewel being the historic Garde Theatre, one of the few remaining historic movie palaces in Connecticut. It was built in 1926, during the golden age of motion picture and vaudeville theater, and has a Moorish décor and palatial design typical of the “exotic” movie palaces of the 1920s. The Garde is becoming nationally recognized for its unique architecture and its multi-faceted programs.
The Garde hosts a wide variety of performing arts throughout the year, including national Broadway musical tours, children’s theater, and film festivals. It is also the home of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Ballet and The Conneciticut Lyric Opera.
