Music in the Living Room at Blithewold
Blithewold, is a 45-room English-style manor mansion filled with family heirlooms, framed by a series of lovely gardens and arboretum on Narragansett Bay. Ranked by Yankee Magazine as one of the five best public gardens in New England, a lot of people come to Blithewold in the summer. But winter at Blithewold can be just as rewarding.
All year long, behind the scenes, dedicated volunteers plan the perfect decoration for each Mansion room, tailored to that year’s theme. This year, each room will explore the interests of the Van Wickle family during the late 19th and early 20th centuries around the concept “Touring the Americas: 50 Years of Van Wickle Family Excursions.” Enjoy decorations perfectly tailored to the theme, bringing the excitement and diversity of the family's domestic travels into each room of the Mansion.
To really bring the scene to life, however, we recommend Music in the Living Room. For an hour – from 3 to 4 pm – Barry Brown, an acoustic guitarist – will entertain. It includes an eclectic mix of carols, American folk, classical and popular songs for the season. Tickets are $17 non-member adult, $16 senior, $13 student/full-time military; $8 youths 6-17 – in addition to the regular Blithewold Christmas admission. (Families – 2 adults and 2 children – can get a special package rate of $40 for the Living Room.)
If music isn’t your thing, Blithewold also features fun and informal afternoon teas, Santa sing-alongs, and creative workshops for both children and adults. There’s also a marshmallow-roasting-christmas-carol-singing-strolling-through-the-twinkling-garden-paths event called Sparkle! Friday nights in the Enclosed Garden and Greenhouse. See the Blithewold events page for a complete list of activities.
