4th Annual Newport Oyster Festival
Little Rhode Island is home to more than 45 oyster farms, each of them producing oysters with their own distinct flavor. And rather than making you drive to visit them all, Bowen’s Wharf -- which bills itself as the anchor of Newport – and sponsor Moet and Chandon – which needs no billing as one of the most popular champagne brands in the world – had an idea: bring thirteen of the best to one location for one spectacular weekend.
The Newport Oyster Festival is basically an outdoor food festival, with growers shucking in and among festival tents populated by local restaurants, sweets vendors, and more. The Festival begins Friday, May 17 with an opening night party ($125 per person, with all-you-can-enjoy oysters and signature drinks, 6-8:30 pm); and continues Saturday and Sunday (Tickets are $27 in advance, which includes six oysters and a beverage; additional oysters are $2 each). Hours are 11 am-5 pm both days, culminating with a Shucking Contest at 3 pm on Sunday. Naturally, there’s music throughout, with three different groups playing 2-3 hour sets on each of the days. Buying tickets online is the way to go here – you may be able to purchase at the door, but your $15 admission won’t include the oyster/beverage package you get by advance purchase.
